  Biography

Mr. Chadwick Kamei is currently the Director of Bands at Pearl City High School and Director of the University of Hawaii West Oahu Band. He received his MA in Music Education (2009), and Bachelor of Education in Music from the University of Hawaii (2002). He is currently pursuing his DMA in Music Education through Boston University.

Under the direction of Mr. Kamei, the Pearl City Band has performed at the 2018 Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade; the 2016 and 2009 Hamamatsu Festival in Hamamatsu, Japan; The 2014 McDonalds Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago, IL; Troy University in Troy, AL in 2013; the 2011 London New Year’s Day Parade in London, England; and at the 2007 Beijing International Olympic Youth Festival and Parade held in Beijing, China as a pre-Olympic celebration.

The University of Hawaii West Oahu Band was formed in the spring of 2014 through the collaboration of Pearl City High School and the University of Hawaii West Oahu. This ensemble performs numerous concerts each semester with its membership coming from the University and talented high school musicians.

Mr. Kamei currently holds memberships in the American School Band Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, Hawai‘i Music Educators Association, and the Oahu Band Directors Association. He is a Legion Laureate of the John Philip Sousa Legion of Honor and in 2016 was elected to membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, considered to be one of the highest honors given in the wind band profession. Mr. Kamei is an elected member of the National Band Association’s Board of Directors for the 2018-2020 biennium.

Advising the Beginning Teacher

The first years of teaching are challenging. There are many things to learn, organize and accomplish. This clinic will focus on evaluating the beginning teacher and helping to guide them into focusing their efforts to crucial areas of starting their program.


Repertoire Selection for Developing Bands

Teacher

Finding repertoire for the ensembles is always difficult. The most difficult ensembles to select music for is the lower ensembles in a multi group program. This clinic will highlight some of the considerations that should go into selecting music to keep your ensemble engaged while keeping their interest.


Starting up Your Booster Program

Teacher

Creating a boosters is as simple as asking parents to assist in aspects of your program. Making it a federally recognized non-profit, however, is a complicated process. This clinic will focus on setting up both the non-profit side of the boosters as well as structuring your boosters. It will also advise on how to set up the by-laws and articles of incorporation for the organization.


The Planning and Coordination of Ensemble Traveling

Traveling with an ensemble is always a daunting effort. This clinic will focus on how to plan for your ensemble so that they are engaged, excited and most importantly, safe when they are traveling.
