  Biography

A nationally recognized advocate and leader for the advancement of music education, Scott Sheehan is the Director of Bands and Music Department Chairperson at the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School in Hollidaysburg, PA. He holds a B.S. Degree in Music Education and a B.M. Degree in Music Marketing from Clarion University, and holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the Pennsylvania State University.

In addition to serving as an Educational Clinician for Conn-Selmer, Mr. Sheehan is currently serving as the Immediate-Past President of the Eastern Division for the National Association for Music Education where he is the Program Chair for the All-National Honors Ensembles and served on the National Executive Committee. As an active member of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, Mr. Sheehan has served as State President, as well as the District 6 Vice President and the District 4 President and Curriculum and Instruction State Representative. He coordinates the PMEA Leadership Academy, serves on the PMEA Mentoring Program Steering Committee, is co-chair of the PMEA Model Curriculum & Assessment Steering Committee, and facilitated the development of PMEA’s most recent Strategic Plan.

Mr. Sheehan has also served as the NAfME Mentor for Band, and he was recognized at the state level as a Pennsylvania Keystone Technology Integrator by the Department of Education. He also served on the Educator Effectiveness Stakeholders Steering Committee for the Department of Education and served as a lead teacher for the implementation of the Student Learning Objectives initiative for PDE. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu, the International Bandmasters Fraternity, was named Teacher of the Year in 2013 by the Hollidaysburg Area School District, and received the Outstanding Music Educator Award from Penn State University’s College of Arts and Architecture in 2016. He is an active guest conductor and clinician throughout the country and performs trumpet with the Hollidaysburg Community Band where he also serves as the group’s Associate Conductor. Additionally, he performs with the Altoona Brass Collective and the Blair County Brassworks for various community events and local church services. Scott and his wife Amy have a daughter Elizabeth.

Advocacy in Action: Building & sustaining your music program

Every music educator must be an advocate now more than ever! This clinic will help teachers create a successful grassroots advocacy plan to ensure that ALL students have access to a quality music education. Participants will complete an "advocacy inventory" of their own teaching situations and will engage in rich discussion about the issues surrounding the path forward for music education.


Am I Being Graded on That? Standards and Assessment in Instrumental Music

Assessment in large instrumental ensembles can be a challenge for even the best music educators. This session will focus on best practices and strategies for assessing students in the band and orchestra settings while using technology and aligning the new National Standards to your curriculum and assessments.


Diving Deep into the National Standards in Instrumental Music

This session will help music educators unpack and use the 2014 National Standards and the model cornerstone assessments in their instrumental classroom. This is a “roll up your sleeves”, “let’s get into the weeds” session giving the music educator some real tools that they can use to reach and teach the National Standards.


Finding Your Fire: Lead and inspire

In today's educational climate the need for strong leaders in music education is critical. This session offers various tips and strategies to discover and empower the leader within each of us while focusing on relevancy, access, and responsiveness to the needs of all students.


Ready for Hire: Interviewing strategies to land the job

This session offers tried and true tips to assist promising music education majors with interviewing skills to successfully land their dream job. Be prepared to sit in the "Hot Seat" for a mock interview!
